Pattamadai Pai, woven from korai grass

From loom to home

Made slowly for everyday use

Thadam Pattamadai Pai is a mat that honours what is often left unseen, the footprints, the traces, the quiet marks left behind by hands that have given their lifetime to a craft. Thadam, meaning footprint or trace in Tamil, is a deeply poetic name for a mat that is itself a record of human skill, patience, and devotion pressed into every woven strand. The design is dark, moody, and unapologetically vintage in its soul. A deep, commanding dark shade dominates the body of the mat, and running across it at measured intervals are slender horizontal lines of natural Korai grass, pale and luminous against the darkness, like faint traces of light caught on an old photograph. Then, at the base of the mat, the palette shifts with quiet drama, a broad band of warm terracotta and deep maroon emerges like embers glowing beneath ash, rustic and rich, grounding the entire composition with a warmth that the darkness above makes all the more striking. There is something deeply nostalgic about this mat; it carries the feeling of old homes, worn wooden floors, and the kind of handmade things that only grow more beautiful with time and use. Handwoven in Pattamadai using Korai grass from the Thamirabarani riverbanks, the Thadam Pai is for those who find beauty not in the loud and the obvious, but in the subtle, the layered, and the lived-in a mat that does not simply decorate a space, but gives it a soul, and quietly reminds every person who walks upon it that they too are leaving a trace worth remembering.
