FAQ
Good things to know before you choose.
Is this one side bag really handmade?
Yes. Toda embroidery is worked by hand through counted stitches, mainly by Toda women artisans, without a stencil or embroidery frame.
Is Toda embroidery GI recognised?
Yes. Toda embroidery is a GI-recognised heritage craft from the Nilgiris, known for its disciplined red, black and off-white visual language.
What makes this one side bag special?
Each piece carries reverse-side, knot-free embroidery and sacred geometric motifs inspired by the land, life and cultural memory of the Toda community.
Why does this craft feel rare?
The Toda community is small, with around 1,600 people, and fewer than 1,000 Toda women continue to keep this painstaking craft alive.
Will every piece look exactly the same?
Small stitch, colour and placement variations are natural in handmade embroidery. They are part of the character of a slow-made textile.
How should I care for it?
Keep it dry, store it folded, and spot clean gently. Avoid harsh scrubbing, bleach and machine wash cycles that can stress hand embroidery.

About the Toda community
A living heritage, carried forward by hand.
The Toda people are an indigenous pastoral community of the Nilgiris, the Queen of Hill Stations. Their embroidery is carried mainly by Toda women, fewer than 1,000 of whom continue to keep this vulnerable craft alive through patient counted stitches, no frame work, and a disciplined red, black and off-white palette.
Crafted slowly. Carried forward with pride.
