Naanal is the grass that you find by the river. This grass is really important for making Pattamadai pai. People make Pattamadai pai by hand using korai grass that has been processed carefully. This is a craft that has been around for a long time and requires a lot of skill. One thing that makes this mat special is the way it is made. The people who weave it use a technique called tie-and-dye. They use this technique to make three colours on one strand of korai grass.
