Naanal is the grass that you find by the river. This grass is really important for making Pattamadai pai. People make Pattamadai pai by hand using korai grass that has been processed carefully. This is a craft that has been around for a long time and requires a lot of skill. One thing that makes this mat special is the way it is made. The people who weave it use a technique called tie-and-dye. They use this technique to make three colours on one strand of korai grass. The mat has black and orange and the natural colour of the grass. This makes the mat look nice and interesting. It is a weave but it also looks modern. Each mat is made with a lot of patience and care. The people who make them are very creative. That is why each mat is not something to sit on but it is also a story.
